The ‘Ufficio centrale di ecologia agraria’ (Ucea) created in 1876, is, since 2004, the research unit for climatology and meteorology applied to agricolture of the ‘Consiglio per la Ricerca e Sperimentazione in Agricoltura’ [CRA]. It carries out researchers and studies in several fields: agro-climatology, agro-meteorology and phenology to understand and comprehend the relation between climatic changes and agricultural production and the land suitability evaluation. It manages the liaisons with the WMO for the standardisation of the data collection, the treatment procedures and quality control and to elaborate the agro-meteorological information. It collaborates with the regional agro-meteorological services.

Ucea develops and coordinates the following activities:

Meteomont

The Meteomont service, created in 1978 to enhance the security on the snowy mountains, is done be the State Forestry Corps, the Comando Truppe alpine and the National meteorological service of the Italian Aeronautica military: innovative techniques are used to forecast and prevent avalanches, monitor the mountain territory, spread data and information and carry out rescue missions.

The highly trained personnel of the State Forestry Corps, constantly working to safeguard the mountain natural heritage, during the winter months controls the sky areas so as to reduce the risk of damage to people or structures, in case of emergency it rescues people and searches those lost in avalanches.
